Potential side effects of Cialis

While Cialis can cause side effects in some individuals, the majority of users experience only mild effects or none at all. It's worth noting that serious side effects are quite rare, occurring in fewer than 1 out of 1000 patients. This is particularly beneficial when Cialis is used for erectile dysfunction (ED) on an as-needed basis, as the short-term nature of its use helps minimize the likelihood and severity of any side effects that may arise.

When taken on a daily basis for ED or to alleviate symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), some mild side effects may be more common, including:

  • Headaches

  • Nausea

  • Facial flushing and hot flashes

  • Indigestion

  • Congested nose

  • Muscle aches

These mild side effects typically diminish upon discontinuing the medication, and it's recommended to stop using Cialis and seek medical assistance if you experience any of the following more serious symptoms:

  • Sudden vision or hearing issues - discontinue tadalafil immediately

  • A prolonged or painful erection lasting longer than 2 hours

  • Seizures or chest pain.

Any medication, including tadalafil, may in rare cases trigger a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis.

Contact your healthcare provider if you experience any of the following symptoms, which may indicate an allergic reaction:

  • Sudden swelling of the lips, mouth, throat, or tongue

  • Rapid or difficult breathing, wheezing, or a sensation of choking

  • Tightness in the throat or difficulties with swallowing

  • Bluish, gray, or pale skin, lips, or tongue, particularly noticeable in the palms or soles for individuals with darker skin tones

  • Sudden confusion, drowsiness, or dizziness

  • Inability to regain consciousness following a fainting episode

  • Limpness, floppiness, or unusual responsiveness in a child. Additionally, remain vigilant for any swelling, raised areas, itchy sensations, blisters, or peeling rashes that may develop.

If you experience any symptoms indicative of a potentially anaphylactic reaction, it is crucial to seek emergency medical care immediately. (Please note that not all potential side effects of tadalafil are included in this list. For a comprehensive overview, refer to the medication leaflet that accompanies your prescription.)

Interactions/contraindications: essential to never mix Cialis with other medications without your doctor's explicit approval

When you are prescribed any medication, it's imperative to inform your healthcare provider about all medications, supplements, and over-the-counter products you are currently using. Like other ED medications, Cialis may interact with a broad spectrum of drugs, including (but not limited to):

  • Rifamycins

  • Antibiotics

  • Antifungals

  • Antidepressants

  • Barbiturates

  • Medications for high blood pressure

  • Prostate medications

  • HIV or AIDS-related prescriptions

  • Anticonvulsants

Taking Cialis in conjunction with certain medications known as nitrates can cause your blood pressure to drop suddenly to a potentially dangerous level. Individuals with health conditions such as sickle cell anemia or pulmonary arterial hypertension should avoid taking Cialis unless they have received explicit guidance from a healthcare provider.  If you are under the care of a primary care physician or specialist for any health issues, it is crucial to inform them if you begin using Cialis or any medication intended for ED. Your healthcare provider also needs to be informed if you need emergency medical assistance related to any heart condition.

Cialis and alcohol: vital guidelines for safe use of Cialis

Indulging in a single glass of wine or a drink is generally not expected to interfere with the effectiveness of Cialis or pose notable health risks. However, excessive alcohol consumption in conjunction with Cialis can lead to serious complications. Ultimately, it is a personal decision best made in collaboration with your healthcare provider to determine whether consuming alcohol while taking Cialis is prudent for your situation. Always maintain transparency with your doctor regarding your alcohol intake or recreational drug use to empower them to offer informed recommendations.

Moderate alcohol consumption is defined as having fewer than three alcoholic beverages per day, where a “beverage” is understood as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of spirits at 80-proof.

Consuming more than these moderate guidelines while using Cialis can lead to adverse effects, including low blood pressure, dizziness, and an increased heart rate. Both Cialis and alcohol act as vasodilators, which means they relax and expand blood vessels, potentially resulting in dangerously low blood pressure when taken together.

Additionally, mixing excessive amounts of alcohol with Cialis can result in a condition known as orthostatic hypotension. Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, and fainting spells that can increase the risk of falls or other injuries. Orthostatic hypotension may also cause an accelerated heart rate, which could potentially lead to serious cardiac issues. This condition is reported to occur more frequently with Cialis compared to some other ED medications.

If you find yourself experiencing symptoms like headaches or dizziness, it is advisable to avoid alcohol and seek guidance from your healthcare provider. Not only does excessive alcohol intake heighten your health risks during Cialis use, but it can also amplify the chances of developing serious health issues such as heart disease, obesity, and cognitive decline.
