How and when to take tadalafil - Brand names: Cialis, Adcirca

It's important to take this medicine as advised by a doctor or pharmacist. Remember, following your healthcare provider's instructions can significantly affect the medication's effectiveness and safety.

If you have a private prescription for tadalafil, carefully read the information that accompanies your medicine. Different strengths and dosages are available, so it’s essential to know the specifics pertaining to your prescription.

Dosage and Strength

Tadalafil is available in several strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg tablets.

Dose for Erectile Dysfunction

The usual starting dose of tadalafil for erectile dysfunction is 10mg, taken as needed. Remember to limit yourself to one tablet a day.

Depending on individual efficacy and side effect tolerance, your healthcare provider may adjust your dose, potentially allowing for an increase to 20mg if necessary.

Bear in mind that tadalafil's effects can last longer than 24 hours, so it is not recommended to take 10mg or 20mg tablets on a daily basis for erectile dysfunction.

For the medication to work effectively, sexual arousal is necessary, as tadalafil does not induce erections without it.

Dose for Benign Prostate Enlargement

When prescribed for benign prostate enlargement, tadalafil typically comes in 2.5mg or 5mg tablets. The common dose is 5mg, taken once daily.

If you're being treated for both benign prostate enlargement and erectile dysfunction, the recommended dosage remains 5mg taken once a day.

Dose for Pulmonary Hypertension

For treating pulmonary hypertension, tadalafil is often provided in 20mg tablets.

The typical dose for pulmonary hypertension is 40mg—this means taking two 20mg tablets once a day.

If you have issues with your liver or kidneys, your doctor might lower the starting dose to either 10mg or 20mg to ensure your safety.

Always swallow the tablets whole with a sufficient amount of water or juice—avoid grapefruit juice as it may interfere with the medication's absorption.

For erectile dysfunction, take one tablet at least 30 minutes before you plan to have sexual activity to ensure effectiveness.

Conversely, if taking tadalafil for prostate enlargement, it can be consumed in the morning or evening. Consistency is key, so aim for the same time each day for best results.

Tadalafil tablets for pulmonary hypertension are relatively large and may pose difficulties when swallowing.

If You Forget to Take It

If you happen to miss a dose:

  • For benign prostate enlargement – take the missed dose as soon as you remember, and then proceed with your regular schedule.
  • For pulmonary hypertension – take it within 8 hours of your scheduled time. If it's been longer than 8 hours, skip the missed dose and resume your regular routine.

Never take two doses at once, and avoid doubling up on your next dose to make up for a missed one.

If you frequently forget to take your medication, consider setting a reminder alarm, or consult with a pharmacist for additional strategies to help you adhere to your treatment regimen.

If You Take Too Much

Overdosing on tadalafil can lead to a range of side effects, which include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Indigestion
  • Stuffy or congested nose
  • Vision changes, such as blurred vision

Urgent advice: Contact 111 for immediate assistance if:
