How and when to take tadalafil - Brand names: Cialis, Adcirca

It is crucial to follow the medication regimen prescribed by your healthcare professional. Tadalafil is provided in various strengths, including the widely prescribed 20 mg tablet, which is utilized to manage a range of medical conditions.

If you receive a private prescription for tadalafil 20 mg, ensure to thoroughly read the provided information, as the dosage and strength recommendations may vary from standard guidelines.

Dosage and strength

Tadalafil is offered in multiple strengths: 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg tablets. Below, we detail the advised dosages based on specific medical conditions.

Dose for erectile dysfunction

For erectile dysfunction, the usual starting dose is typically 10 mg, taken prior to sexual activity as needed. It’s critical not to exceed one tablet within a 24-hour period.

Your healthcare provider may modify your dose depending on how well the medication works for you and how frequently you intend to use it. The effects of tadalafil can persist beyond 24 hours, so daily intake of the 10 mg or 20 mg tablets is not recommended.

Sexual stimulation is an essential factor for tadalafil to achieve its intended effects.

Dose for benign prostate enlargement

When used to treat an enlarged prostate, tadalafil is available in both 2.5 mg and 5 mg formulations. Typically, the prescribed dose is 5 mg, taken once every day.

For those undergoing treatment for both benign prostate enlargement and erectile dysfunction, the advised dose remains at 5 mg.

Dose for pulmonary hypertension

In the context of pulmonary hypertension, tadalafil is typically found as 20 mg tablets. The customary dosage is 40 mg, achieved by taking two 20 mg tablets once a day.

If you suffer from kidney or liver complications, your doctor may initiate treatment with a reduced dosage of 10 mg or 20 mg.

It is important to swallow the tablets whole, accompanied by a glass of water or juice (grapefruit juice should be avoided).

For erectile dysfunction, ingest one tablet at least 30 minutes prior to engaging in sexual activity.

If you are taking tadalafil for prostate enlargement, it can be taken in the morning or evening; however, establishing and maintaining a consistent time daily is recommended.

Please note that the tadalafil tablets prescribed for pulmonary hypertension may be larger, which can make them more difficult to swallow.

If you forget to take it

In case you miss a dose:

  • For benign prostate enlargement – take it as soon as you remember and then continue with your regular dosing schedule.
  • For pulmonary hypertension – if you recall within 8 hours of your scheduled time, take the missed dose. If it’s been over 8 hours, skip that dose and proceed to take the next dose as planned.

Do not take two doses in a single occasion, and do not compensate for a missed dose by taking an additional one.

If you frequently forget your doses, consider setting reminders or consulting with a pharmacist for tips to assist in maintaining your medication schedule.

If you take too much

An overdose of tadalafil can result in a variety of side effects, which may include:

  • headaches
  • dizziness
  • indigestion
  • nasal congestion
  • visual disturbances, such as blurred vision

Important Reminders:

In case of an emergency that necessitates a visit to A&E, do not drive yourself. Arrange for someone to accompany you or call for emergency services (dial 999).

Bring along the tadalafil packaging or information leaflet, any remaining tablets, and a comprehensive list of any other medications you are currently taking.
